The Common Application

The Common Application (also referred to as Common App) is a college admission application used by approximately 700 schools across the country.  It is important for students to know if the schools they are applying to use the Common Application. Common App schools can be seen here: http://www.commonapp.org/search-college

If a student is using the Common Application the first thing they will need to do is create an account.  They can do that here.  The Common Application is usually more involved than a regular college application.  Students will often need to complete an essay as part of the Common Application.  They will also need letters of recommendation from school personnel and others.  Students should ask teachers, counselors and others for letters at least two weeks prior to the deadline so they have enough time to complete them.  Because it is more extensive, it is critical for students to know their applications deadlines for each school.  This will allow for them to plan out the work that they need to do to complete these applications.  It is wise to begin work on the Common Application early in the fall semester of their senior year.

Once an account has been established, follow the directions on the Common Application to complete your application.  You can always come in and see me if you have questions regarding your Common Application.  I would be happy to work with you and answer your questions.
