Plan to Complete the FAFSA
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is open. Colleges encourage all students to submit the FAFSA for financial aid consideration. The FAFSA opens the door for federal grants, student loans, and work study funds. Many colleges also require FAFSA completion for scholarship consideration. The student and at least one parent will need to create an FSA ID before completing the FAFSA. Students complete the FAFSA during their senior year of high school and every year they are in college.

Idaho LAUNCH Requirements

Idaho LAUNCH is a grant program that provides a one-time opportunity to receive up to $8,000 for in-demand career training. Hundreds of careers are considered in-demand and nearly 9,000 awards are available for Idaho seniors. Students can apply for Idaho LAUNCH through their Scholarship Idaho portal. The early deadline for Idaho LAUNCH is November 30th.

Career Pathway Plan
To receive Idaho LAUNCH funds, students must complete a Career Pathway Plan by logging into their Next Steps Idaho account. The Career Pathway Plan consists of four career-related activities. Instructions for completing the Career Pathway Plan have been posted in the College & Career Google classroom.

Junior Updates (Class of 2028)

SAT or ACT? What's the Difference?
The SAT and ACT are both standardized tests used in college admissions. They are accepted by colleges equally and there is no preference given to either test. However, there are differences between the two tests, including:
  • The SAT covers Reading, Writing, and Math
  • The ACT covers Reading, Math, English, and Science (optional)
  • The ACT offers an optional essay section
*For more information about the two tests, refer to this PDF.

How do Colleges use the SAT or ACT?
Many colleges are now test optional, which means that students can choose whether or not to have their SAT scores considered in the admission process. Some colleges will use SAT scores for scholarship consideration but most will use cumulative GPA instead. Lastly, colleges can use SAT scores to place students in the correct Math and English classes during their first year of college.

How do I register for the SAT or ACT?
Juniors in the Boise School District will be automatically registered to take the SAT at school on April 7th, 2027. If a student chooses to take the SAT or ACT on a different date, they will need to sign up online and pay the registration fee. Students can take the tests as many times as they would like and colleges will accept whichever scores are the highest.
